Gin Distillery

Another great day on the road for a well known supermarket. This time up North to a Gin Distillery. They have a great heritage of gin making though their origonal production area was destroyed by a fire a few years back.

They managed to save the stills and re locate. They were producing gin again 10 days after the fire which is an amazing achievement. Todays Gin Making seems to be very similar to how it was when it all started. The only things that change are the range of botanicals used. Nowadays the flavours of Gin are becoming more complex and  subtle. This company has a female master distiller, and her job is to come up with new combinations of spices, flavours etc that creates a new gin. Th eprocess is very simple. You put the botanicles chosen, the neutral spirit all in a big copper still. Heat it up, the alcohol boils at a lower temperature, rises up the still through the pipes and is cooled. And there is your Gin. Easy Peasy.

Gin has had a massive rise in popularity recently and it is great to see up close the production process. It is just a shame I am not a lover of the drink.
