Following on from last week, the day after visiting the Custard factory we went to the most Southern tip of Great Britain, the Lizard. Here at silly o’clock in the moring we joined Stephen milking his friesian herd that provide the milk for the custard. I was dissapointed that they did not actually provide yellow milk, would have cut out the factory bit I guess.
Joking aside it is a very tough job being a dairy farmer, no day off, no lie in, whatever happens the cows need to be milked twice a day with a near enough 12 hour gap between sessions. On a lovely crisp early Autumn morning it seems a very rerwarding andbeautiful experience. But those days when it is blowing a gale with horizontal rain and pitch black, they must be hard to say the least.
Stephen was born on the farm and they have built a house for their son on the land and hope yet another generation takes up the mantle of keeping the milk flowing and looking after the stunning landscape for all of us to enjoy.
