Last week I was lucky enough to travel to Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia.

We were covering a travel piece about the cooking scene in this city. I was expecting to enjoy the last few Summer days. Taking in blue skies and its famous azure seas. We arrived to a beautiful sunny afternoon but were due to photograph a gathering of local musicians so no beach that day.

The next morning we woke upto thunder and lightning which continued (no word of a lie) until we left two days later! In the meantime they shut down schools, a bridge was washed away and at least one person died in the floods.

This, however hard it made the photography, did not distract from what was the highlight of the visit, the food. We ate in a variety of restaurants, but all of them managed to impress with the quality of their ingredients and the passion that each establishment put into their food.

People describe Cagliari, as the new Barcelona but safer. The prices were very reasonable and the whole experience worth risking life and limb accross the floods and lightning strikes. I would love to revisit in the sunshine, I think it could be the place to go. Low cost flights with BA great food and great beaches (apparently) Oh and don’t forget Flamingos. But hurry though I feel it will soon be spoilt.
