Lisbon Montage
I was in Lisbon last week, and loved the city. It is such a great place to capture through the lens. An intoxicating mix of colour, architecture, landscapes and transport. Where the old and the modern are happy neighbours. Some of it is very run down and derelict. Other areas, ultra modern and shiny. The views out to the sea are glimpsed for seconds through stacks of buildings. The gradients steep and unforgiving. The streets narrow and cobbled with ancient trams coming at you from all angles.
To have a ride in one of the more classic trams is an experience in itself, as it tries to hang onto the tracks and avoid sliding down the hill. Fighting its way past tourists and lorries in the smallest of spaces. The people are a mixture of friendly and frankly not very. The food and drink superb and very well priced for such a city. The history is fantastic and of course the photo opportunities never ending. I was exhausted from all the walking to get to all the view points I needed. It is called the city of seven hills for a good reason.
I had been here before for Food and Travel magazine, covering the many cafes and bakeries around the city. Including a visit to the well known f PASTÉIS DE BELÉM (The custard tart). Now sadly a bit of a tourist trap, but when I was here before it felt much more real. The recipe supposedly only held by two people at a time.
The weather this time was not too kind to us, so no beautiful blue skies, but at least I did not over heat with all the walking. We stayed in a fantastic hotel The Epic Sana Hotel which I have to say is one of the best I have stayed in. Though not the best location.
